Frequently asked questions

Where does the grid and pricing data come from?
CurrentCost pulls publicly available grid and electricity data directly from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Generation-mix and rate data are sourced per region and refreshed when you open the app. Figures are the latest published by the source and may lag real time depending on each ISO's reporting cadence.
Why does the app ask for my location?
Location is used only to determine your U.S. state so the app can look up your local electricity rates. Your coordinates are sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to identify the state, and only the state abbreviation is kept on your device. You can decline location access and pick your ISO/RTO region manually instead. See the privacy policy for details.
How does the EV charging optimizer work?
It lines up current pricing and grid conditions to highlight when charging is cheapest and cleanest in your region. Enter your vehicle and rate details, and CurrentCost surfaces the better windows to plug in based on the latest available data.
The appliance calculator — what do I enter?
Enter your electricity rate (¢/kWh) and the appliance's power draw (watts) plus how long it runs. CurrentCost returns the cost per hour, per cycle, or per month. If you're not sure of your rate, the app can estimate it from your state.
My data looks stale or won't load. What should I do?
A few things to try:
  • Pull to refresh, or close and reopen the app to fetch the latest data.
  • Confirm you have an internet connection — CurrentCost fetches live data on demand.
  • If a specific region shows no data, the upstream source may be temporarily unavailable; try again shortly.
  • Still stuck? Email us the region and roughly when it happened.
Do I need to create an account?
No. CurrentCost has no sign-in, no account, and no subscription. It's a one-time $0.99 purchase, and your preferences stay on your device.
Does CurrentCost track me or show ads?
No. There's no analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking SDKs. We don't know who uses the app or how. Full details are in the privacy policy.
How do I request a refund?
All purchases are handled by Apple. To request a refund, visit reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID. Refunds are at Apple's discretion under their standard policy.
Which devices are supported?
CurrentCost is built for iPhone. Make sure you're on a current iOS version for the best experience. If you hit a device-specific issue, let us know your model and iOS version.
